Tinnitus

 

Do you hear a ringing, roaring, clicking, whooshing, or hissing sound in your ears? If so, you may have tinnitus.  Although bothersome, in most cases tinnitus isn’t a sign of something serious.

Definition:  Tinnitus is noise or ringing in the ears.  A common problem, tinnitus affects about 1 in 5 people.  But tinnitus isn’t a condition itself – it is a symptom of an underlying condition such as hearing loss.  Roughly 25 million Americans have experienced tinnitus.

 
 

What can cause tinnitus?

  • Hearing loss
  • Loud noise
  • Medicine
  • Head and neck trauma
  • Other health problems
 

Diagnosis:   If you think that you have you tinnitus, consult your doctor to determine if a cause for the tinnitus can be found and subsequently treated.  If medical treatment is not appropriate, find an Audiologist in your area who has knowledge about tinnitus treatments.  The Audiologist will assess your hearing and counsel you regarding non-medical treatment options.

Complications:  Tinnitus can significantly affect your quality of life.  It affects people differently, but may be linked to:

  • Trouble concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Depression

Treatment depends on the cause.  Although there is no cure for tinnitus, several treatments have been discovered that may give you some relief.  Not every treatment works for everyone, so you may need to try several to find the one(s) that work(s) for you.
